I wasn’t planning to write about love this week. I was deep in the weeds of designing AI agents: building workflows, engineering context windows, orchestrating which data gets pulled from which database at exactly the right moment. Pretty unromantic stuff.

Then I was talking to my wife and before going back to tackle the next thing on my list, I said what I always say: “I love you.”

And it hit me. I’d been doing context engineering all day, professionally and personally, without realizing they were the same thing.

What Context Engineering Actually Is

Here’s the short version: when you design an AI agent, a system that can reason, use tools, and take action, the hardest challenge isn’t making it smart. It’s making sure the right information is present at the right moment in time.

Imagine a founder running a growing company. An AI agent supporting their decisions might need to pull real-time revenue data, combine it with cash flow projections, factor in upcoming payroll, and cross-reference market trends, all to surface a recommendation at the exact moment the founder needs it. Pull outdated numbers or forget a key variable? That one decision, made on incomplete context, can ripple across the entire business.

The beauty of a well-designed agent isn’t raw intelligence. It’s contextual awareness: knowing what matters, when it matters.

The “I Love You” Protocol

That “I love you” when you leave for work in the morning. The family photo on your desk. Your kid’s drawing pinned to the fridge. Your partner’s face as your phone wallpaper. The quick “thinking of you” text in the middle of a busy afternoon.

We don’t do these things because we forgot we love someone. We do them because love, like context, fades from active memory when life gets noisy.

Every “I love you” is a context refresh.

Every photo on your desk is persistent memory.

Every good night kiss is a way of saying: before this day closes out, let me reload what truly matters.

We’ve been engineering context our entire lives. We just called it love.

Why the Best Agents and the Best Relationships Run on the Same Principles

The principles that make AI agents effective are the same ones that make relationships thrive.

Timing matters. Calling the right service at the wrong time produces garbage results. In relationships, “I love you” whispered during a hard day lands completely differently than one mumbled while scrolling your phone. Same words. Different context.

Intentionality matters. Agents don’t magically know what’s relevant. Someone engineers the system to retrieve the right information at the right time. In our lives, if we don’t intentionally pull in reminders of what matters, the noise of deadlines, bills, and notifications will crowd it all out.

Context degrades. In AI, there’s a concept called context windows: a limit on how much a model can hold at once. Old information gets pushed out by new input. Our attention works the same way. If you stop refreshing, if you stop saying the words, stop making the calls, the signal gets lost in the noise.

The Meaning Might Be Simpler Than We Think

The deeper I go into designing these systems, the more I learn about myself. I keep coming back to one thought:

What if the meaning of life is really just about learning to love well?

Learning to love ourselves enough to grow. Learning to love others enough to stay intentional. Learning to love what we do enough to show up fully for ourselves, even when the odds are stacked against us. Learning to love our values enough to stand behind them when it’s inconvenient. And most importantly, learning to love the journey, even when we can’t see where it’s going.

That’s the ultimate context engineering. Keeping love loaded in your active memory, every single day, no matter how noisy the world gets.

Your Valentine’s Day Challenge

Audit your personal context. Look around your workspace, your phone, your daily routines. Are the reminders of what matters still working, or have they become invisible wallpaper? And just as important: what’s polluting your signal? What notifications, distractions, or habits are drowning out the things that actually matter?

Refresh one piece of context today. Send that text. Say those words out loud. Put up a new photo. Not because you forgot, but because the people you love deserve to be in your active memory, not your long-term storage.

Design your own “I love you” protocol. Just like a well-designed agent has scheduled context retrievals, build a small ritual that reloads what matters. Morning coffee together. A note in a lunchbox. A standing Wednesday call with your parents if you’re lucky enough to still have them, or your close friends. Make it a system, not an afterthought.

The best AI agents in the world are the ones that never lose sight of what’s relevant.

We were looking at our reflection in the spoon. On one side, our faces looked “normal.” Flip it around, and suddenly we were upside down. Nothing else in the kitchen changed—same light, same people, same moment. All that changed was the angle. A tiny shift, and the whole image was transformed.

It struck me how similar this is to the way we hold our beliefs.

Most of the time, we walk around assuming our view is the “right side up.” Our thoughts feel true simply because they are ours. But like that spoon, a slight change in perspective can flip the whole picture. What once felt obvious can suddenly look incomplete—or even wrong.

If we’re not careful, our digital tools can subtly become mirrors that only reflect our existing beliefs back to us.

Now, layer in the world we live in.

Algorithms quietly surround us, learning our preferences and feeding us more of the same. Netflix suggests the shows we’re likely to enjoy. Amazon recommends products we’re likely to buy. Large language models and AI systems do something similar with words: they pull in information based on our past prompts and interactions, giving us answers that feel tailored, familiar, and comfortable.

There’s nothing inherently bad about this. Relevance is useful but we need to be aware of the hidden risks.

If we always ask questions in the same way, from the same angle, we’ll keep seeing the same version of ourselves—“right side up,” even when we might be upside down.

But even when we try to change angles, there’s another layer we need to keep in mind: the AI models themselves are not neutral.

Recent research published by Oxford University Press compared large language models to global survey data shows that many LLMs tend to reflect cultural values closer to English-speaking and Western European countries by default—especially around things like self-expression and social values. In other words, if you ask a model for “a general opinion,” you might actually be getting “a Western-leaning opinion,” even if that’s not your culture or context.

That doesn’t mean these tools are useless—it just means we should use them with awareness.

So how can we flip the spoon on our thinking in practice?

• “What might I be missing?”

• “Give me the strongest argument against my position.”

• “How would someone from a different culture or background see this?”

We can use AI as a tool to question ourselves, not just to comfort ourselves.

But as powerful as this is, there’s one thing AI can’t replace: other humans.

At the end of the day, we’re social creatures. We grow by bumping into other minds, especially the ones that don’t think like we do. No model can substitute for sitting with a real person from a different background, listening to their story, their fears, their hopes, and their worldview.

The cycle I hope my son learns is this:

1. Expose yourself to different views—through people, books, and yes, even AI.

2. Listen with an open mind, especially when it’s uncomfortable.

3. Then step back and think for yourself. Form your own worldview, knowing it will keep evolving.

I often think about Socrates’ quote: “All I know is that I know nothing.”

To me, it’s a daily reminder to hold our thoughts lightly, to let new ideas challenge us, and to stay curious about where we might be wrong.

If there’s one thing I’d like my son to carry with him, it’s this:

You don’t have to be certain to be grounded. All I really know is that love makes everything better.

So next time you’re sipping coffee, scrolling your feed, chatting with an AI, or talking to someone whose life looks nothing like yours, think about that spoon. Ask yourself:

• What if I’m seeing this upside down?

• What’s one angle I haven’t considered yet?

Sometimes, all it takes is a small flip in perspective to see a different truth.

AI amplifies ambition. It doesn’t create it.

When President Kennedy declared we’d put a man on the moon within a decade, AI didn’t exist—at least not to its current extent. But human desire, attention to detail, and relentless focus made the impossible real. That same principle applies today. AI agents can help us achieve our goals faster, but they need your vision to know where to go, your judgment to verify they’re on track, and your creativity to push boundaries no model has seen before.

The question isn’t whether AI can do the work. It’s whether you have the ambition to direct it toward something that matters.

We don’t need less human intelligence. We need to harness our Organic Intelligence differently.

The companies that win won’t be the ones that replace people with AI. They’ll be the ones that empower people with AI.

What's a System Prompt? (And Why You Have One Too)

In the AI world, every model has something called a "system prompt"—think of it as the AI's core identity. It's the foundation that shapes how the AI interprets everything and responds to the world.

Here's the fascinating part: we humans work the same way.

Our brains create internal maps of how the world works, what's possible, and—crucially—what isn't. These mental maps are our personal "system prompts," quietly influencing every decision we make.

Breaking the "I'm Not Good at This" Loop

Let me share a personal story that changed how I think about limitations.

My wife is brilliantly creative—excelling in art, writing, and design. When I tried teaching her mathematical algorithms for robotics navigation, her first response was that familiar refrain we've all been programmed to say: "I'm not good at math."

I asked her to do something radical: forget everything she'd told herself about her abilities. Just visualize. Just try.

Within days, she not only understood the algorithms—she saw their beauty. Her "system prompt" had been rewritten.

And me? Writing never came naturally. It wasn't "my thing." Yet here I am, sharing this newsletter with you—something I started during my paternity leave last year specifically to challenge that limiting belief.

Life, Like AI, is a Probability Game

Here's where it gets really interesting. AI models predict the next best word based on three things:

1. Their system prompt (core identity)

2. Your specific question (current context)

3. Their training data (accumulated knowledge)

Our lives work exactly the same way. Our environment—our "context"—shapes our next move. Who we are right now (let's call it time t) influences our next moment (t+1).

But here's the empowering truth: we can change the trajectory.

Just like AI models sometimes "hallucinate" and produce unexpected outputs, we can deliberately break our patterns. We can rewrite our system prompts to increase the likelihood of the future we want.

The Power of This Present Moment

A friend recently recommended "The Power of Now," and its core message aligns perfectly with what I'm learning from AI:

The present moment is literally a present—a gift. This exact moment you're experiencing is the compound result of countless previous decisions. The future isn't written yet.

Think about it: Every AI query starts producing words and eventually stops. Similarly, from the moment we're born, we know our story will eventually end. The difference between a meaningful life and a predictable output comes down to our choices (our "system prompt") and our inherent traits (our "training data").

Your Action Plan: Keep It Simple

One of my professors gave me an advice I'll never forget: KISS—Keep It Simple.

Want to become a runner? Don't plan a marathon. Jog for 5 minutes today.

Want to be more creative? Don't wait for inspiration. Doodle for 3 minutes.

Want to learn AI? Don't dive into complex papers. Keep a list of unfamiliar terms you encounter and ask ChatGPT to explain them one by one.

Here's the fascinating part: AI models learn that "running" and "athlete" are related because they appear together in thousands of contexts. These words literally sit close together in the AI's dimensional space—like neighbors in the same neighborhood.

You learn the exact same way. Each time you jog, your brain strengthens the connection between "you" and "athlete." You're not trying to become an athlete—through repetition, you naturally migrate there. After a month of 5-minute jogs, you unconsciously start living in the same mental space as "person who runs."

Identity isn't declared. It's practiced into existence.

The Bottom Line

We're living through an AI revolution, but the real revolution is understanding that we've always had the power to reprogram ourselves. Your current "system prompt" has guardrails—protective beliefs meant to keep you safe. But through conscious reflection and small actions, you can rewrite them.

The future you want isn't just possible—it's probable. You just need to adjust your prompt.

• Build tools that push human boundaries even further

• Maybe, just maybe, solve those persistent global challenges like poverty, education, and healthcare access within this century

There's this thing in AI called backpropagation. Fancy name, simple idea: after every attempt, look back and ask what worked, what didn't, and what to adjust.

It's basically what we do when cooking, right? Taste the sauce, think "needs more salt... maybe some garlic," and adjust. You're not starting over—just tweaking.

I started doing this with my days. Nothing crazy, just a quick check-in at the end of my day:

• What went well?

• What needs improvement?

• One takeaway for tomorrow?

A few weeks ago, I realized I'm way sharper in the early morning before my son wakes up. Like, dramatically sharper. So now I tackle the hard stuff then. Small shift, big difference.

Try this: Tonight, just ask yourself—if today was a recipe, what’s one ingredient you would adjust tomorrow?

Finding Your Sweet Spot

Here's where it gets interesting. Machine learning has this concept called gradient descent—it measures the slope (yes, that derivative from calculus actually comes in handy) to find the best path to your goal without overshooting.

Picture this: You're experimenting with a new recipe. Add pomegranate molasses drop by drop? You'll be there forever. Dump in the whole jar? Now you're desperately trying to fix it with more of everything else.

The trick is finding that middle ground—enough to make progress, not so much you can't course-correct. And just like gradient descent uses the slope to guide its path, we can use our intuition and feedback to find our best direction.

This applies to... well, everything:

Here's what's been working for me: each day, I jot down one - three things that went well and one thing I'd adjust. That's it. No complex system, no app, just a note in my phone. At the end of the week, I reflect on my progress and then have 1 takeaway for the following week.

It's like running a gentle optimization loop on your life. In agility, it’s known as retrospective. Not trying to become a different person overnight, just getting a tiny bit better.

Look, I'm not saying we need to turn into robots or optimize every second of our day. That sounds exhausting.

But there's something powerful about realizing that growth doesn't have to be this dramatic, all-or-nothing thing. Sometimes the best changes happen so gradually you barely notice—until one day you realize you're handling things that used to stress you out without even thinking about it.

Maybe that's what we can learn from AI: consistent small adjustments in the right direction can take us places we never imagined. And unlike algorithms, we get to define what "better" means for ourselves.

We have 6 months left until the end of the year! Don’t wait until January of 2026 to “Start your goal”.

I just finished reading through Stanford's 2025 AI Index Report, and wow – there's so much happening in the AI world right now! I know these technical reports can be overwhelming, so I thought I'd share the most interesting parts that might actually matter to your daily life. This report has 12 major takeaways that I'll break down – Let’s dive into what's really going on with AI in 2025.

What's Actually Changed in AI This Year?

AI is mastering harder challenges faster than ever. The report highlights how quickly AI is improving on new challenges. Systems that could only solve 4.4% of certain coding problems in 2023 can now solve 71.7% of them! This rapid progress shows how AI is getting smarter at an accelerating pace.

AI is getting WAY cheaper to use. Back in 2022, AI models were much more expensive. Well, that same level of AI power now costs 280 times less. What used to cost $20 per million tokens in November 2022 now costs just $0.07 per million tokens as of October 2024. (In case you're wondering, "tokens" are just how AI systems process text - think of them as word pieces. For example, "sunshine" might be one token, while "understanding" might be split into "under" and "standing" as two tokens. To put things into perspective, 1,000 tokens are approximately equivalent to 750 words in English text.

Small is the new big. AI models used to be massive to work well. Now they're getting tiny but smarter. Models that are 142 times smaller than what we had in 2022 work just as well. Think of it like phones - they've gotten smaller and more powerful over time.

AI is everywhere now. 78% of organizations report using AI (up from 55% last year), and over 70% are using generative AI for at least one business function. It's not just an experiment anymore - it's becoming as normal as having a website.

The quality gap between AI systems is shrinking. Last year there was a big difference (11.9%) between the top AI model and the 10th best one. Now that gap has shrunk to just 5.4%, and the top two models are separated by less than 1%. This means quality AI is coming from more sources.

AI in Your Everyday Life

The report shows AI is quickly moving from labs to our daily lives:

Healthcare is changing fast. The FDA approved 223 AI-powered medical devices last year, up from just 6 in 2015. Some AI systems can now spot cancer or identify high-risk patients better than doctors can in some cases.

Self-driving cars are actually... driving. Companies like Waymo are now providing over 150,000 autonomous rides each week in the US, while Baidu's Apollo Go robotaxis are becoming common across Chinese cities. Still, 61% of Americans remain skeptical (though that's improving from 68% last year). As much as I am passionate about this technology, I guess I fall within the 61% category. ^😅

Your job is probably changing, not disappearing. Studies show AI tends to boost productivity across skill levels and often helps narrow the gap between low and high-skilled workers. Only 36% of people globally think AI will replace their job, while 60% expect it will change how they work.

The US leads in creating top AI models, but China is catching up fast. In 2024, US-based companies and labs created 40 notable AI models compared to China's 15. Although US leads in quantity, Chinese models are rapidly closing the quality gap. Also, China leads in AI publications and patents.

The Surprising Stuff

AI won two Nobel Prizes! Well, the people behind AI did. The work that led to deep learning won the Physics Nobel, and the team that created AlphaFold (which predicts protein structures) won in Chemistry. AI is literally changing how we understand the fundamental building blocks of our world.

Countries are investing billions in AI infrastructure AND creating new regulations. Canada pledged $2.4 billion, China launched a $47.5 billion semiconductor fund, France committed €109 billion, India pledged $1.25 billion, and Saudi Arabia is putting $100 billion into AI development. At the same time, U.S. federal agencies introduced 59 AI-related regulations in 2024 – more than double the previous year. This isn't just tech anymore - it's becoming fundamental infrastructure that governments want to shape.

From the private AI investment perspective, US investment grew to $109.1 billion, which is 12 times China’s $9.3 billion and 24 times the U.K.’s $4.5 billion. Generative AI alone is attracting $33.9 billion globally in private investment — 18.7% increase from 2023.

China installs more robots than everyone else combined. They deployed 276,300 industrial robots last year - over 51% of the global total. For comparison, that's 6 times more than Japan and 7.3 times more than the US. 🤯

Responsible AI is evolving unevenly. The report found AI-related incidents jumped by 56.4% in 2024 to a record high of 233. But while organizations recognize the risks, there's a gap between awareness and action. For example, only 64% of companies are concerned about AI inaccuracy, and even fewer are actively addressing it. Meanwhile, new benchmarks for assessing AI safety and factuality are starting to emerge.

What People Think About All This

There's a pretty big divide in how people feel about AI:

Asia is enthusiastic, the West is cautious. Large majorities in China (83%), Indonesia (80%), and Thailand (77%) see AI as beneficial, while only minorities feel that way in Canada (40%), the US (39%), and the Netherlands (36%).

Here's my take on what matters:

1. AI tools will become more accessible and affordable - definitely worth trying them out if you haven't already.

2. The quality gap between AI services is shrinking - so you don't necessarily need the most expensive option to get good results.

3. Learning to work alongside AI is becoming an essential skill - 81% of CS teachers think AI should be part of basic education, but less than half feel equipped to teach it. Self-learners have an advantage here. Be curious and continue on learning!

4. Even complex fields like medicine and law are being transformed - so staying aware of AI developments in your industry is becoming important regardless of what you do.

5. The technology is getting more energy efficient but carbon emissions from AI training are steadily increasing - AI hardware efficiency has improved by 40% annually, which is good news for the planet. On the other hand, recent models have a higher emissions for training — GPT4 (2023) at 5,184 tons, and Llama 3.1405B (2024) at 8,930 tons. To put things into perspective, the average American emits 18 tons of carbon per year.

6. Complex reasoning is still a challenge for AI - Despite all this progress, AI systems still struggle with certain types of logical reasoning. They can often fail to reliably solve problems where provably correct solutions exist, especially with instances larger than what they were trained on. This makes them less trustworthy for high-stakes applications where precision is critical.
