Can AI be dangerous? Like fire, AI can be both beneficial and dangerous. Fire can warm our homes or cook our meals, but without caution, it can cause destruction. It’s the application that defines its impact.

Getting Started with AI: AI has become increasingly accessible, with platforms like ChatGPT by OpenAI, Gemini by Google, Claude by Anthropic and others providing powerful AI models for public use. These platforms allow you to explore, learn, and innovate in various fields. Setting up an account is straightforward, enabling you to start engaging with powerful AI models immediately.
The Art of Prompt Engineering: Prompt engineering is the process of crafting inputs (prompts) for AI models to elicit useful and relevant responses. It’s a crucial skill for leveraging AI effectively, ensuring that the AI produces better and more accurate results.
Why Prompt Engineering Matters: Consider prompt engineering as setting a SMART goal: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Just as SMART goals lead to clearer results, well-crafted prompts lead to more precise and useful AI responses.
For example, let’s look at two different prompts:
• A vague prompt: “Help me get fit.”
• A SMART prompt: “Create a fitness plan that includes 30 minutes of cardio three times a week and strength training twice a week, to lose 10 pounds in three months.”
The second prompt is much more likely to yield a detailed and actionable fitness plan because it is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. This illustrates how important it is to be clear and precise in your prompts to achieve the desired outcome.
Practical Tips for Effective Prompts Here are some tips to help you write effective prompts:
Articulate clear instructions: Define what you want from the AI clearly. Include details in your query to get more relevant answers.
Poor Prompt: How do I stop my child from crying?
Good Prompt: Assume the role of a pediatrician. Provide possible reasons and solutions for why a 5-week-old baby might cry after being fed and having their diaper changed. Note: This is used for illustration only; these AI models do not replace subject matter experts.
Instruct the model to assume a role - Prepare your model to take on a specific identity (such as that of an expert in a certain field). This will help to improve its performance for your scenario.
Use clear indicators to separate different parts of the input - Indicators like three quotes, XML tags, section headings, etc. can help mark sections of text that have different treatment.
Example) Summarize the text delimited by triple quotes: “““ insert text here ”””
Give model time to “think” - Requesting a "chain of thought" or “think step-by-step” before an answer can help the model in reaching accurate answers more consistently.
Control output format - Specify the desired output format to ensure consistency and readability
Example) You can have the model’s output be in 250 words, bullet points, charts, etc.

Brainstorming: Whether you would like to come up with a new way to jazz up your left over meals or new ideas for your next project, large language models can help you with that.
Entertainment: Language models can be used to generate stories, jokes, or even lyrics.
Customer Service: They can provide automated customer support, answering frequently asked questions or guiding users through troubleshooting steps.
Research: Researchers can leverage language models to summarize papers, explore new topics, or generate a hypotheses.
It’s important to note that prompt engineering is a crucial skill for interacting with these models effectively. Crafting the right prompts can lead to more accurate and useful responses from the AI.
Things To Avoid:
Avoid relying on models to generate factual information. It does not replace subject matter experts.
Use with care on math and logic problems.
Do not share sensitive or proprietary information.
